Pedestrians can walk safely with the help of ada detectable warning tiles that are truncated or raised.

Just like motor roads have their signs, pedestrian pathways also have their signs and they are called ada detectable warning. When you drive, you look at traffic lights and other signs like speeding, median, and sharp turn for safe driving. Similarly, you get a warning while walking.

How do pedestrian signs work?

Pedestrian signs work on senses. You don’t need to look for pedestrian signs as you can feel them under your feet. For example, if you step on a truncated dome or a raised platform, you automatically become slow as you feel the difference in your feeling about the footpath. It is a warning that you are about to access a point where you need to be careful.

Let’s understand the functioning of pedestrian signs with examples

You are walking at your regular speed on a footpath flanked by a road on one side and a boundary wall on the other. The footpath is covered with tiles but the roadside tiles are slightly different. They are raised to alert the pedestrians. They are ada approved detectable warning signs.

You will never step on the raised tiles because you know that they are bordering the road and if you accidentally jump on the truncated tiles, you will return to the footpath to continue your journey. In this way, you can walk safely towards your destination. The raised tiles will prevent you from jumping on the road or even go close to the road.

Take another example of pedestrian signs

You access the staircase that you can see but the truncated tiles close the staircase will keep you alert about the risk associated with accessing the staircase. A slip and fall accident on a staircase could cause severe injury leading to hospitalization. The ada detectable warning tiles close to the staircase will keep you alert and prevent you from meeting a slip and fall accident.

Truncated tiles are advantageous for all

Children

Children can miss a warning sign but they can’t miss the feel of the floor. For example, if a naughty child jumps over a warning tile, he will automatically stop on the tile to see what is wrong with that area. In this way, he will remain safe while doing naughty things on a footpath.

Elders

Older people walk slowly. For them, ada approved detectable warning tiles are like mechanical breaks. These tiles will help them manage their speed and direction. The tiles will guide them on where to change their speed.

Distracted pedestrians

Some people are always glued to their mobile phones. They are always looking at their phones instead of on the way they are moving on. But they know that they are safe because they can sense danger under their feet. They know that raised floor is an alert sign.

Visually impaired persons

Persons with difficulty in visibility can walk freely following the ada detectable warning signs. They know that they only need to walk on a flat platform and become alert on stepping on raised tiles.
